nited Way of Southern Cameron County is committed to
collaborative solutions
for a healthy, thriving community. United Way seeks to implement strategies to achieve system changes with measurable results for three fundamental areas: education, health and income. These system changes will be achieved through program funding, organizational support, advocacy and convening the community to address critical issues.
Funding for grants provided through this application process comes from donations from community members and local businesses. Programs must demonstrate results through outcome attainment as well as fiduciary responsibility.

A
pplications must clearly focus on outcome based programs that address the issues defined in one of United Way’s identified priority areas:
Education
Education is the foundation for a good life, setting the individual on a path of personal fulfillment, economic security and societal contribution. A strong early childhood education is a strong predictor of later academic achievement. On-time high school completion opens the door to a world of opportunities in higher education and the workplace. Choose a funding area:
School readiness
Priority will be given to programs that address school readiness in neighborhoods in Port Isabel, Laguna Vista, Land o Lakes, Port of Brownsville and Buena Vida.
Academic achievement in math and reading for elementary and middle school children
Priority will be given to programs that address math and reading scores in Port Isabel and Brownsville elementary and middle schools.
On-time high school completion
Priority will be given to programs that address high school students with chronic absenteeism and failure to pass the STAAR.
Health
Good health allows children to learn better and adults to be stable, productive workers. Access to health care, reducing risky behaviors and decreasing obesity in children and adults are fundamental to improving the overall health of our community, decreasing absenteeism and mitigating the financial risk created by poor health.

Reduction in risky behaviors of children or adults
Priority will be given to programs that address youth substance abuse, mental health, bullying and the prevention of teen pregnancy.
Improved health and fitness
Income
Cameron County is one of the poorest areas in the nation. Creating and sustaining financial stability for individuals and families is a goal for United Way of Southern Cameron County. Choose a funding area:
Crisis resolution and self sufficiency
Financial Stability
Priority will be given to programs that increase income, decrease debt, increase savings and improve credit scores.
Workforce Development
Priority will be given to programs that facilitate application assistance, resume writing and interview skills, computer and software training and job training that leads to employment.
